Art Philosophy / Who we are
IF YOU LOVE TO SING, COME SING WITH US!
Since its founding 1975, the Transylvania Choral Society has consistently attracted individuals who enjoy singing and are willing to work hard in order to present two free concerts annually, one in the spring and one in winter.
For the first twenty eight years TCS concerts were held at area churches, but as concert attendance increased, it was obvious a larger facility was needed to accommodate our patrons. In 2006, the decision was made to hold future concerts at the Paul Porter Center for Performing Arts located on the Brevard College campus, and that is where we have remained the past seven years.
Choral Director Dr. David Gresham made his first appearance with the Transylvania Choral Society as Conductor at the December 2010 Concert. He is also the Director of Choral Music at Brevard College. His impressive educational background includes a B.M. from Wingate University, M.M. in Choral Conducting from University of Colorado at Boulder, a M.M. in Vocal Pedagogy and Performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a D.M.A.with emphasis in Vocal Performance and Choral Conducting from the University of Georgia.
Dr. Gresham is also an active oratorio soloist and recitalist, performing with several churches, college choruses, and professional organizations and is keenly interested in performing works by living composers. As a conductor, Dr. Gresham has worked with choirs from elementary school through college, adult community choirs, and church choirs. He is a frequent guest clinician, helping choirs work toward a vibrant and healthy vocal tone while exploring the musical demands of choral literature. His experience and vitality brought new and exciting demands to the TCS insuring its presence as a significant performing group in the Brevard area.
The TCS Accompanist is Ms. Patricia “Patti” Black. Her strong credentials have allowed her to establish musical affiliations in Brevard, Hendersonville and Asheville. In addition to her reputation as a highly skilled and experienced pianist she actively promotes arts education for youth in the Brevard area and has her own studio.
TCS members take the Summer off, but we have resumed rehearsals for our winter concert. If you enjoy singing, you are invited to consider becoming a part of this choral group. Each "semester" sees some turnover in the membership, depending on people's schedules, so New and Returning members are always welcome.

As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, we depend on contributions from the business community and individuals to help provide the financial support required to continue with our mission; providing free concerts to the community. We sincerely appreciate the generosity of our current sponsors and ask that you consider joining them with yours.
